31.10.2024: North Rhine-Westphalia announces expansion target for heat from wastewater

The state government in North Rhine-Westphalia is the first federal state in Germany to set an expansion target for heat from wastewater. By 2030, 1 TWh/a of heat from wastewater is to be activated. By 2045, a total of 4 TWh/a should then contribute to the heat transition in North Rhine-Westphalia. In order to achieve the target, two ongoing working groups are defining the framework conditions and rules for the market ramp-up. This target represents a real milestone for heat recovery from wastewater.

Stephan von Bothmer, COO of UHRIG Energie: ‘Heat from wastewater is still relatively unknown. This initiative will help us a lot in generating awareness for this fantastic technology. The potential is particularly great in NRW. We are therefore really hoping for a dynamic development. The heat transition must finally get underway.’
